George Flores

Assistant Band Director

Abbreviated Biography: Mr. Flores has been at Harlingen South High School since 2004. He is 2004 graduate of Texas State University-San Marcos. While at Texas State he was a student of Dr. Keith Winking and a member of the Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble, Texas State Basketball Band, Bobcat Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. In addition to being a member in the marching band, Mr. Flores spent two years(2000, 2001) as a visual tech for the Bobcat Marching band. Mr. Flores was on the hornline of Phantom Regiment in the late 90's.

He also worked as a Marching Technician and Visual designer; Southside High School 1996-97, Marching Technician; New Braunfels High School 2003, Marching and Music Technician; Seguin High School 2001-2003. At Harlingen South his duties included high brass instruction, marching music arranging and director of Jazz Band II and Concert Band. He was also a trumpeter and the Public Relations Director of the Harlingen Jazz Orchestra, and a trumpeter with the Celebration Brass Choir in Harlingen, TX.

George Flores has previously served as Associate Director of Bands at Harlingen South High School in Harlingen, TX. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. While at Texas State, he studied trumpet under Dr. Keith Winking. In addition, he studied trumpet with Mr. Andrew Gignac of the San Antonio Symphony, Mr. Bernie Nero of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and Mr. Pete Bond of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Flores studied jazz under Dr. James Polk and Dr. John Mills where he was a member of the Texas State Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble. Other influential teachers include Mr. John King, Mr. James G. Hudson, Mr. Raul Rodriguez and Mr. John Stansberry. While in San Marcos, Mr. Flores was lead trumpet in the Oakwood Baptist Praise Band and had performed at many local events and musicals. While residing in Harlingen, Mr... Flores was the founder and manager of the Harlingen Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter in the Harbor Lights Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter and soloist with the Wesley United Celebration Brass Choir and lead trumpeter in the Latin Experience Latin Band from Harlingen, TX.
While at Harlingen South, duties have included director of the 3rd Concert Band, director of the 2nd Jazz Ensemble and Co-director of the 1st Jazz Ensemble. Other duties include Music Arranger for the Mighty Hawk Marching Band and currently in 4th year as the Brass Caption Head for the Mighty Hawk Band. Responsibilities have included conducting the 3rd band in both concert and sight-reading areas. Directing a very active Jazz Program and taking both 2nd and 1st Jazz Ensembles to many Distinguished Jazz Festivals throughout the State of Texas. Teaching private lessons in a studio setting to both trumpet and french horn students as well as teaching classes at the beginner level. Currently in 4th year as Music Arranger for the Marching Band in a highly successful and competitive 5A marching program. In addition, have created a Visual Manual for the Marching Program and helped the band become highly successful at many area, and State competitions. The band earned a spot at the 2006 5A Texas State Marching Band Contest. As the Brass Caption Head for the Mighty Hawk Band, has established a highly extensive brass curriculum that has placed the Harlingen South Brass section as one of the elite brass sections in the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. In 2007, Mr. Flores was selected as a Guest Clinician for the ATSSB Region 15 Jazz Band.
